Construction monitoring
Tree conditions on a planning permit usually require an arborist to attend at set stages and certify that protection held. Monitoring is how those conditions get closed out without an argument at occupancy.

The condition people find too late
Planning permits routinely condition tree protection on arborist attendance at nominated stages, with a final sign off before occupancy. It is written into the permit at endorsement and read properly by almost nobody until the certificate is being chased.
By then the fencing has been down for months, the excavation nobody photographed happened in week three, and there is no record to certify from. Monitoring exists so that never happens.
What a monitoring programme looks like
Pre commencement
Protection installed as specified, photographed, signed off before a machine moves.
Scheduled attendance
At the hold points in the protection plan, plus any works inside a protection zone. Each visit produces a dated record with photographs.
Exceptions handled at the time
Roots encountered, an incursion, a change to the works. The decision gets made and recorded while it can still be influenced.
Completion certification
The documentation that closes the tree conditions out, prepared from the record rather than reconstructed from memory.
Cheaper as a programme than as a series of emergencies
Attendance booked against a schedule can be planned around your programme and paired with nearby work. Attendance booked the day council asks why the fence is down cannot.
Common questions
How many visits will I need?
It depends on the permit conditions and the works. Send me the endorsed conditions and I will tell you what they actually require, which is sometimes fewer visits than people assume.
Can you monitor a site somebody else assessed?
Yes, though I will inspect the trees myself before certifying anything about them.
What if protection is found to have failed?
It gets recorded honestly, along with what happened and what can be done about it. A monitoring record that never notes a problem is not worth anything to anybody, least of all you if it is later challenged.
